What happened to Ireland’s brother?

In 1946 John Ireland wrote to his sister with no knowledge of what happened to his brother
Alleyne, assuming erroneously that he had died: ‘You have always made excuses for Alleyne’s detachment. You expect me to come to the rescue…and I am reaching an age & condition when I cannot stand these family demands and need to consider my own state’ (Ireland to Ethel, 16 November 1946). In fact, Alleyne spent at least the last thirty years of his life in the Catskill Mountains, designing a cliffside retreat called ‘Little Darjeeling’, where, in his 37-acre estate, he entertained politicians and other intellectuals. He died only in 1951. This is his marvellously-situated pad, currently up for sale:

5280 CAUTERSKILL ROAD, Catskill, $895,000, Web #: 12513739
