On this day: 8 December 1920

On this day in 1920 W.G. Whittaker (best known for his Bach scholarship) delivered a lecture on ‘Modern British Music’ under the auspices of the West Hartlepool Lecture Society. Whittaker worked his way through several young composers, including Cyril Scott, Rutland Boughton, Benjamin Dale, Bridge, Howells, Goossens and Lord Berners. To represent Ireland he chose ‘The Undertone’ within a discussion that commented on theĀ composer’s ‘rugged and virile character’ and ‘strong vein of impressionism’ (Hartlepool Mail, 9 December 1920, p. 2).
