In 1958 Ireland was the beneficiary of the cancellation of the planned performance by the Hallé of Tippett’s new Symphony. Instead, the programme substituted a first half of music by Ireland, including only the second performance by this orchestra of the Piano Concerto, with Kendall Taylor as soloist. Barbirolli and the orchestra ‘found the heart of the matter in a restrained but unfailingly eloquent accompaniment’. This first half of the concert also included A London Overture and the Manchester premiere of the Concertino Pastorale.
