Ireland at Alexandra House

On 8 March 1900 Ireland played his Sea Idyll in Alexandra House, shown below in an engraving dating from 1887. This was a venue used by the RCM for concerts, and the following year, on 21 March 1901, the first performance of the composer’s Symphonic Prelude took place there too. Alexandra House was built in 1884, and, as Queen Alexandra House, is still one of the principal halls of residence for young women studying at the RCM.
