On this day: 14 October 1925

On this day in 1925 Ireland’s ebullient little song ‘When lights go rolling round the sky’ was featured in a Proms concert, sung by Keith Falkner with Frederick Kiddle at the piano, the latter best known for his partnership with Gervase Elwes. Falkner (below) went on to become Director of the RCM.

The evening’s event was a very mixed programme in terms of genre and style, consisting of:

  • Brahms Academic Festival Overture
  • Bantock Sappho No.1b ‘Hymn to Aphrodite’
  • Mozart Concerto for violin no. 3
  • Verdi selections from Simon Boccanegra
  • Franck Symphony in D minor
  • Camille Kufferath Mirages
  • Hermann Löhr Immortality
  • Ireland’s song
  • Mussorgsky Marcia alla Turca ‘The Capture of Kars’
