On this day: 8 October 1924

On this day in 1924 Ireland’s tone poem, The Forgotten Rite, was performed at the Proms within a programme of works by the following:

  • Jeremiah Clarke
  • Hermann Goetz

  • Massenet
  • Ireland
  • H. Lyall Phillips

Another musician with Manchester connections was among the artists that night. This was Isobel Baillie (1895–1983), former pupil at Manchester High School for Girls and regular performer with the Hallé.  Sir Henry Wood conducted the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra in Ireland’s orchestral work, which was completed in 1913 after successive holidays on Jersey.
