On this day: 28 September 1935

On this day in 1935 John Ireland appeared at the Proms as soloist in his own work for piano and orchestra, Legend. This was actually a late addition to that night’s programme. The original intention was for a complete performance of Falla’s ballet. El Amor Brujo, with Conchita Supervia (1895–1936) singing selected songs. Owing to her indisposition on account of her pregnancy the concert was re-thought, including only the concert suite from the Falla ballet, and Elena Gerhardt (1883–1961) replacing Supervia. Hence that night’s audience were lucky enough to see the composer making a rare and unexpected Proms appearance as a pianist.
