On this day: 15 September 1929

On this day in 1929 Horace Stevens sang the song ‘Vagabond’ in a recital in London. Stevens (1876–1950) was born in Melbourne, and was invalided to England during the First World War. In 1919 he made his debut with the Queen’s Hall Orchestra and went on perform much English music, before returning to Australia in 1934. He is not the only Australian associated with Ireland, as pianist William Murdoch (1888–1942) was the pianist in the first performance of the Second Violin Sonata in 1917.
